Obama Gets a Dig at Donald Trump Who Claims That Have a Pet Dog in the White House is "Phony"

Of the many conventions Donald Trump has shattered as President, not owning a dog seems like a sad one to break.
There are many longstanding traditions that one must follow when they become the President of the United States. In his two years as the current US President, Donald Trump has broken many of them. For example, he has declined to use Air Force One, didn't move his family into the White House right away, and, most worryingly, has involved his children in official business (Where are the nepotism alarms when you need them?). A more harmless tradition that he's broken, however, is the 130-year-old practice of owning a pet dog. Every President who has come before Trump has owned one, and so, it seemed a little odd that he did not believe in continuing the custom. At a recent rally, he opened up about why he chose to do so.

The rally took place in El Paso, Texas, and was part of his official campaign for the 2020 Presidential Elections. During the rally, he revealed why he didn't adopt a dog as soon as he moved into the White House reports Daily Mail. He stated, "I wouldn't mind having one, honestly, but I don't have any time. How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn? Would that be right? It doesn't. It feels a little phony to me." Perhaps this is Trump's way of rejecting what a stereotypical American family needs to look like, a convention Americans have been perpetuating for years.

The perfect nuclear family in American culture consists of a husband, his wife, two kids (preferably a son and daughter), and, of course, a fluffy, lovable four-legged creature. President Trump has definitely smashed this stereotype, and not owning a dog is just a simple addition to the conventions he's broken. He continued, "A lot of people say, 'Oh, you should get a dog.' Why? 'It's good politically.'" Some individuals actually do believe that having a pet dog is good for a President's image, boosting their general acceptance.

He went on, "And I said, 'Look, that's not the relationship I have with my people.'" And perhaps President Trump is correct. Unlike previous Presidential elections, voters were not as easily swayed by candidates who followed stereotypical protocol or image standards. Time and time again, Trump has shown constituents that image does not control his political decisions. This is what has been most persuasive to his supporters as this gives him a sense of authenticity and relatability.

After his statements, a person in the crowd exclaimed that Obama had a dog. In response, Trump remarked, "Yeah! Obama had a dog. You are right." The crowd of supporters then burst into uproarious laughter. While this was just another jab in the Obama-Trump feud, it did fuel the engine of anti-Obama sentiment that has existed within the Trump fan club. Nevertheless, it is true that Obama did have a dog. In fact, he had two. The first was a gift to his daughters Sasha and Malia for moving into the White House with him.

At the time, he had announced, "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House." This puppy was Bo, the Obamas' first ever pet dog. Bo, born on October 9, 2008, was a male Portuguese Water Dog who fit right into the family. He was chosen specifically because of his hypoallergenic breed as Malia's allergies dictated a need for a dog who would not lead to flare-ups. Currently, he is 10 years old.

The Obamas also adopted a second dog named Sunny. Just like Bo, Sunny is a Portuguese Water Dog but is female. She's referred to as Bo's younger sister and was introduced via First Lady Michelle Obama's Twitter account on August 19, 2013. When Sunny was first introduced, she caused quite the scandal as the Obamas chose to buy her from a breeder rather than adopt a dog from a shelter. She cost about $2,300 and was allegedly born from a batch of frozen sperm.

Despite his lack of interest in owning a pet dog, President Trump did share with supporters what his favorite breed was - German Shepherds. "There is nothing better than a good old-fashioned German Shepherd. It's hard to believe. It's true," Trump said. "They are unbelievable. They'll run past all these empty boxes, and one of the boxes has drugs in it, deep down in a box. And it comes to a screeching halt barking at it every time." It is unsurprising that Trump would choose to praise the utility of German Shepherds.
