The study was conducted over 17½ years and factored in other lifestyle parameters that could tip the scales towards heart disease and high cholesterol. Past research has been considered flawed for disregarding things like daily activity, overall diet, smoking habits, etc. The lead author of the study, Victor Zhong, who is also a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago warned, "Eggs, especially the yolk, are a major source of dietary cholesterol." Zhong and his fellow researchers found that a single large egg can contain approximately 186 milligrams of cholesterol.

Treating oneself to an additional 300 milligrams of dietary cholesterol on a daily basis was linked to a 3.2 percent increased risk of heart disease and a 4.4 percent increased risk of early death according to data analyzed by Zhong and his team. Furthermore, for ever additional egg half that one consumes per day was linked to a 1.1 percent increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and 1.9 percent increased risk of early death due to any cause determined the research. The study had over 29,000 participants who were followed over a period of approximately 17½ years. They were divided into six US study groups, within which researchers collected and analyzed data. During the follow-up period, it was found that a staggering 5,400 cardiovascular events had taken place. These included 1,302 strokes that were both fatal and nonfatal strokes, in addition to 1,897 incidents of fatal and nonfatal heart failure, and 113 other heart disease deaths. Apart from this, another 6,132 participants had expired due to other causes.

The study will prove to be invaluable to doctors, patients, and even the public, claims an editorial by Dr. Robert H. Eckel of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, that was published alongside the study. He reasoned, "The association of egg consumption and dietary cholesterol with [cardiovascular disease], although debated for decades, has more recently been thought to be less important." He also wrote that the new report "is far more comprehensive, with enough data to make a strong statement that eggs and overall dietary cholesterol intake remain important in affecting the risk of [cardiovascular disease], and more so the risk of all-cause mortality."

Eckel who was not involved in the study also observed that the association between eggs and the accompanying risks of heart disease and early death is "modest" at best. However, he also added, "Considering the negative consequences of egg consumption and dietary cholesterol in the setting of heart-healthy dietary patterns, the importance of limiting intake of cholesterol-rich foods should not be dismissed." Zhong and the co-authors of the study concluded their work on a similar note, urging that, "These results should be considered in the development of dietary guidelines and updates."

Meanwhile, a senior dietitian with the British Heart Foundation, Victoria Taylor, explained to Science Media Centre that "this type of study can only show an association, rather than cause and effect, and more research is needed for us to understand the reasons behind this link." She added, "Eggs are a nutritious food and, while this study focuses on the amount we're eating, it's just as important to pay attention to how the eggs are cooked and to the trimmings that come with them." She reminded, "Eating healthily is all about balance."
