I’m sure that most of us would agree that dogs do some pretty amazing things. At times, they are a companion that is by our side through thick and thin and at other
times, they can be trained to do almost anything that we need them to do. For an 11-year-old German shepherd named Bodza, a long and meaningful life was what
he lived and the soldiers that worked with him never forget him.

Bodza was part of the U.S. Air Force and he would sniff out bombs. He was in Iraq working with soldiers as well as in Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan. As an explosion detection
dog, he worked a lot and he risked his life on a daily basis. The soldiers that worked with him were very thankful that he did his job well.

A special friendship formed between Kyle Smith and Bodza. They started working in 2012 on a security mission in Kyrgyzstan. When it was time for the dog to retire,
Smith adopted him and gave him a forever home. “I loved working with him because he taught me a lot — patience as a young handler, and how to understand that this job isn’t just about you,” Smith said.

The two of them lived a great life.

“Bodza was a goofy and gentle dog,” Smith said. “We had horse stables directly beside our obedience yard and when [the horses] were out, no obedience was going to be done. He’d run the fence line continuously.”

Bodza was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy in 2016. “His hind limbs lost their use and he could barely stand up anymore, much less walk,” Smith said. “He couldn’t handle the stress on his body and using the restroom was a task.”

Smith took his dog to a clinic in El Paso, Texas in March. Other soldiers and airmen who worked with the dog met him there. It was time for Bodza to be put down.

As many of you know, this is not an easy decision to make and the airmen had difficulty with it as well.

“I was holding Bodza as he passed,” Smith said. “It was a rush of so many things. It was just overwhelming.”

“He had a smile on his face when he was getting put to sleep.”

They wanted to give him a hero’s goodbye so they draped his body with an American flag.

Not only did he help to detect explosives, he provided companionship to soldiers that were deployed far from home. Many people are going to be touched by the story of this faithful dog. Regardless of whether it is a military dog or not, the faithfulness that they show touches hearts.
